Cytotec (misoprostol) works by reducing the amount of stomach acid produced therefore protecting the lining of your stomach. Before starting your treatment with Cytotec you will need to obtain negative pregnancy test result. If you suspect a pregnancy - make sure you talk to your health care provider right away about it, as your baby may be seriously harmed if Cytotec is taken during pregnancy. Sometimes Cytotec may cause diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. If these side effects persist or get bothersome – make sure you report them to your health care provider. In most cases however they go away on their own. The occurrence of diarrhea may be minimized if you take this medicine with some food. Before starting the treatment make sure you talk to your doctor and let him know if you have or used to have irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal problems, or inflammatory bowel disease, as these conditions may prevent you from safely taking this drug. Such symptoms as constipation, headache, flatulence, irregular menstruation, menstrual cramps, and vomiting may appear at the beginning of your treatment and will need to be reported to your health care provider only if they get bothersome.
